Description:Treating quantum systems as being completely isolated from its surroundings is an idealization that is not always justified. Moreover, the interaction with the environment can give rise to many interesting effects not found in closed quantum systems. I will introduce the theoretical tools required to analyze open quantum systems and discuss recent achievements in the preparation of strongly correlated many-body states by controlling the coupling to the environment.
